Have you ever noticed how freely people like to give advice? There are times when I wish that people would keep their opinions to themselves. Part of the issue is that my job is to give people advice. I am a social worker and as a case manager I give people advice regarding services that are available within the community. Often times my job is made more difficult to the other people that are also advising the clients not to listen to me because I work for the government. It gets to be a hassle. When we moved into our new neighborhood we discovered that our new neighbors loved to give advice also.

When we moved we had all the decisions to make for our home such as utilities, garbage pick up, local phone company service and cable or dish service. The previous owner left a list of the services that they had used. They also gave a commentary on whether or not they would continue with the different services if they were staying. They advised us against the local phone company and recommended going with a national carrier. We checked into the fees for the local phone company compared to the national system. The local phone company had much more competitive rates, as well as internet service that was available. They had a plan that included unlimited long distance service, local service and internet service for a flat rate each month. The rate was much less than our long distance bills from our other home, also with the move all of our calls to extended family members would be long distance. We were out in our yard the second day after we moved in and our new neighbor walked over to introduce himself. We asked him about which utilities he would suggest. He explained which garbage pick up he used and why, he also said that they did not go with the local phone company because they spend six months out of the year in a warmer climate. They strictly use their cellular phones. He said that when they were living in their house full time they used the local phone company and were happy with the service.

We decided that we might as well pick services and go with them. It is not like we were making a life time commitment to the companies. If they did not meet our needs we could switch. So far we have been satisfied with our choices. We have had to listen to people complain about one service or another, but we have been pleased with our experiences. It seems people almost get upset when you admit to liking a utilities company.
